Description

Looking for a castle on the west coast of Scotland with views overlooking the sea, which can take up to 20 people and within one hour of Glasgow airport? Look no further!

This is a large Victorian Baronial castle situated on a high promontory with stunning views overlooking Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde. Set within four acres of private grounds, the castle dates back to 1852 and was designed by the renowned architect, Alexander “Greek” Thompson.

An imposing six storey structure built into the rockface with a central tower, with ground, first and second floors are available on this basis for 16 adults and 4 small children. City life can be located in Glasgow, which is 36 miles away, or head further west to see more hills and lochs. With good reception rooms and a large selection of bedrooms, this is ideal for larger gatherings looking for a big old castle to have fun in.

Property Manager Note: this castle is vulnerable to strong westerly winds and heavy rain. After heavy downpours, the loch facing single pane sash windows (and stone facings) which by law cannot be replaced with modern windows, may well let in some water. Measures have been put in place to minimise the inconvenience caused to the occupants of this room.

In summary this is an historic old castle with an air of past glory, with the odd draught forming part of its authentic charm. The owner has made provisions for this in pricing the property accordingly whilst taking into account the historical interest, size and location of this unique castle to stay in Scotland.

**email review submitted by a recent guest  | Sept 2019**

"Our stay in July 2019 was all we had hoped and more. The home provided bedrooms for our guests and comfortable accomodations. The housekeeper was on site to welcome us and arrived as scheduled for our departure. The owner was gracious in working with us to provide a welcome party for our Scottish relatives. There were some communication issues but everything came together for a lovely, sunny day for us to meet and get acquainted. The younger members of our family determined the best spots for wi-fi and gathered in one room to use their phones.  For Americans that wanted a warm family gathering this house definitely met our needs. Thank you for your help along the way."

  • Reception Rooms
Decorated with a mixture of period and modern furniture, the castle offers quirky accommodation. Entering at ground level, there is the large L-shaped drawing room with open fire, which is ideal for hosting larger gatherings as it is 800 square foot in size. Known as the Music Room, with Greek pillars, with white walls and gold banding, it is a bright space which feels modern, which includes a piano (which is decorative only). Next door is a secondary sitting room, which is completely different in style. This room has traditional dark wood panelled walls with red sofas, red wallpaper and motifs above the doors. With an open fire it is a warm cosy room. Additionally, there is a less formal room, a TV room, with comfortable seating, which is ideal for children.

    Kitchen & Dining
The kitchen and the dining room can be found next to each other at the rear of the castle. The kitchen is a small to medium size room which is adequately equipped. The cooking apparatus is a commercial stainless steel range with 7 hobs and 2 double ovens, which is ideal for cooking for up to 20 people.

There is adequate wall and drawer storage and the kitchen table that can seat 4/6 people. The dining room has a robust table and feature chairs which comfortable accommodates up to 20 guests.

    Please note
There are restrictions on the use of external caterers in relation to hosting special occasions and the owner supplies a list of sample menus and guideline tariffs, provided by a chef/catering firm familiar with the kitchen at the castle.

  • Accommodation is provided for a group of 16 adults and 4 small children in 8 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and 2 shower rooms, as follows:

    Loch Facing Bedrooms

Property Manager Note: this castle is vulnerable to strong westerly winds and heavy rain. After heavy downpours, the loch facing single pane sash windows (and stone facings) which by law cannot be replaced with modern windows, may well let in some water.  Should this happen, guests are encouraged to follow instructions in the House Book, on how best to minimise the inconvenience. They will also be given the choice to move into other bedrooms on a lower level of the castle (normally locked off to guests) which will be made available under such circumstances.

  • Situated on the Rosneath peninsula, the castle is to be found in 4 acres of private grounds above the shore road, overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Once through the entrance gates there is a gravel drive which is surrounded by a sloped lawn, mixed woodland and a drop down to the paddock which sits below the castle, and is predominantly a wild area ideal for wildlife. There is adequate parking for 10 cars. With the Firth of Clyde and Loch Lomond on your doorstep, this is a great area for water based activities or a trip to Glasgow which is only 40 miles away.

Gas BBQ provided (5-6 burner) between Spring and Autumn.

  • Catering
Please note there are restrictions on the use of external caterers in relation to hosting special occasions and the owner supplies a list of sample menus and guideline tariffs, provided by a chef/catering firm familiar with the kitchen at the castle.

    Over Occupancy
Please note that weddings or events (ie parties) above the capacity of the house are prohibited.  The maximum occupancy is as advertised, and we cannot accept booking requests over and above 16 adults and 4 small children.  Please make sure you check the bedroom configuration as parents will have to share a bedroom with the children. Infants in travel cots are not counted.

In need of repair and upgrading. We were all thrilled to stay in a castle and did not expect it to be a bijou hotel but leaks in ceilings and fridge freezers in need of repair were not expected!!!

Personal service quick to respond

A lot of things wrong with the property that should be rectified

We're pleased to hear your overall experience was good despite the awful weather you experienced whilst on holiday which we know created a few water ingress issues. Having experienced two months of prolonged, dry, warm weather over the summer months it was unfortunate the weather turned during your stay. Fortunately you were in full communication with the owner and his housekeeper during the course of your holiday who resolved the issues as best they could under the circumstances.

They were always helpful and informative

We aim to offer guests a personal service and are glad to hear you found us helpful.

Nice view. Terrific design of the castle. No complaints on the beds or baths. When the grandkids explored the lower grounds they found poison ivy. Fortunately, they aren't very allergic and it cleared up quickly.

Sounds like you had a super time, look forward to welcoming you back to a Scott property in the future

The only real issue was Visa flagging the transaction. The place was awesome, but more like 50 minutes from the airport.

Yes large transactions, particularly from overseas accounts, are subject to additional verification processes, just to ensure account safety. Happily it doesn’t delay things too much!

we did really love the castle although it is let down by the maintenance and cleaning team - I emailed the owner about this matter and I do hope for further visitiors he addresses my concerns as it should be a lot better for the kind of money you are paying

I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the castle, thank you once again for your comments and further communication with our property manager, who as you are aware has now re-scheduled a visit to the property, we look forward to welcoming you back to a Scotts property in the future.

Thank you for you feedback - Great to hear you found the booking process easy and straightforward.

We thought the castle was beautiful and enjoyed being there. Not having contact with anyone upon checkin and not having the essentials needed and expected upon arrival put a damper on things though and it was cold in the castle with no heat.

Many thanks for your comments, we're pleased you enjoyed being at the castle and we can confirm that the check in details have been updated to ensure a smoother handover.

Additionally we've also requested some more information with regard to the heating system, thanks again for your comments.

Nai was great to work with, very friendly and helpful.

Thanks so much for a great review, I'm thrilled you found the service friendly and helpful and hope to help again with any future plans you may have.

The castle great location needs some work as we told mr. Antony Sherlock of Scottish castles.

Thank you for your initial comments and for the additional detail that I requested. With “real” guest feedback, it is easier for us to advise on any specific improvements that is required - which is now on-going. Three stars out of five is close to the mark for this property and if we can help with your travel plans in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again.

Well run operation, very helpful!

The castle was excellent. Plenty of space so no-one got under anyone's feet but also plenty of room to all get together as a group. The whole atmosphere of the castle was fantastic. Homely but also grand. Lots of rooms and corridors with nooks and crannies perfect for hide and seek. Eating in the big dining room was the perfect way to be in each other's company. Lots of candles and log fires added to the experience. Plus every room was warm and cosy the whole time thanks to some excellent central heating. I would thoroughly recommend it and definitely would go back again.

Sounds like an excellent time was had by all at this magical castle! Totally agree there is lots of room for everyone to spread out here, with plenty to see and do in every corner of the castle. Sounds like some lovely times were spent around the dining table and in front of the open fires - we look forward to hearing from you again in the future when you wish to return!

I rented a castle for a three night break: a family get together to celebrate an eightieth birthday. The staff were helpful and responded quickly. i would definitely recommend them and would use this company again.

Great to hear that you would recommend our team for help with holidays! It was a pleasure assisting  with your plans and we hope to hear again in the future.

Although the property had a certain wow factor and we did in the main have a great week here, there were a number of issues.
I should say, that weather wise it was probably the worst week we have had in the UK all year which did not help the leaking roof. When we arrived, the housekeeper said there was a leak in one of the bedrooms so it wasn't usable immediately. It wasn't too serious as some of my guests were only arriving 3 days later. She came back the next day to check and it had stopped so she dried out the beds and made up the room. We had also noticed that the washing machine in the apartment kitchen had not been emptied and was leaking water on the floor. I mentioned this and she apologised and sorted it out.
She did say that she'd had a problem getting everything ready for our arrival because of the bedroom leak that she'd been trying to fix.
There were also two vases of 'dying' flowers that were starting to smell, one in the entrance and one on the piano that I had to clean out.
On our second night (Sunday), we sprung a leak just above the bed in the master bedroom - not too serious, just a light drip but irritating none-the-less. The same bedroom that had the previous leak also had another small leak but fortunately not above the bed. I called the house keeper first thing on Monday and again at midday. I had no response so I called again on Tuesday and left a further voicemail (a little more desperate). She only called back on the Wednesday and said she send someone round at about 4.30pm. That didn't suit as it was the day of my birthday celebration and I had a function from 3.30pm so she came round on Thursday. The leak in the master bedroom couldn't be fixed so in the afternoon, she came back with a man and moved the bedroom around so that the dripping was no longer on the bed and we lived with a pot under the leak for the rest of the week.
There was also a leak around the windows in the master bedroom and in the music room which again we lived with for the week after having some papers spoilt.
There were a number of plug sockets and lights that did not work - despite checking the trip switches regularly as instructed.
There were also some bedside and standing lamps that had no light bulbs in.
The 'fluffy white gowns' in the master bedroom had bad stains on them. I didn't check the others but none of my guests complained.
A number of dishes and pots were not properly cleaned and we resorted to washing everything before we used it.
There were at least three chipped cut-glass tumblers which the housekeeper removed when I mentioned this on the Sunday.
The was no plug in the bath in the bedroom on the upper ground level of the apartment - we went and purchased one ourselves on the Tuesday.
The shower drain on that level was also blocked and the toilet seat had to be replaced. A number of toilet seats were loose.
The bath in the tower bedroom also had a drainage issue.
The heating went off on Wednesday night and we couldn't re-ignite as the boiler room was locked. The house keeper did this when she arrived on Thursday.
The piano was also horribly out of tune and had a number of dead notes - I had check this with the owner before we went as I had a pianist for my function on the Wednesday.
I trust that the Scotts Castles will see fit to seek some form of compensation.

We certainly agree in this case you needed to be compensated for all the trouble caused which we've since discussed and you're now in receipt of. We were mortified to hear of your catalogue of troubles particularly during the worst of Scotland’s wet & wintry weather. Being set on a rock face with open views to the loch, this ancient castle does get battered by the south westerly winds and rain which can (and in your case did) leak through the sandstone and single pane sash windows in loch facing rooms. Unfortunately the owner happened to be abroad at the time and his brand new cleaner was not equipped to deal with the problems that ensued, all of which then had a knock-on effect to housekeeping for which he, and we, sincerely apologise.

Consultants were helpful and booking & payment process was simple.

More than I could have dreamed of. We were thrilled with the castle, the views, the town and townspeople. It was a fabulous vacation with privacy and space for everyone, and wonderful gathering spaces for all of us. The kitchen was beautifully outfitted as were the rooms and bathrooms, and the owner was easy to reach and very helpful. We had a few small issues with power and appliances, but nothing very troublesome or out of the ordinary for a rental. I couldn't be more pleased!

Sounds like you have some happy holiday stories to share now your home! Excellent to hear the castle exceeded expectations and you had a fabulous time! Glad that the owner was available to assist with a few glitches and you enjoyed your stay. We hope we may be able to help again in the future should you wish to re book.

Very helpful. Quick reply with questions. Easy to use and understand.

Thanks so much for your comments, we do try and be as helpful and prompt as possible when helping with bookings so this is great to hear!

We had a wonderful time at this venue, The views were wonderful, the castle itself was clean, homely and we were welcomed by the housekeeper who we could call upon at any time if we needed to.
The castle is set high overlooking Loch Long, it is in easy reach of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
There were 16 people in our party and we booked the Hotel for a week, Self Catering. The facilities were wonderful and the Dinning hall majestic.
I can only rate our stay the property, facilities as wonderful. Thoroughly recommend the property and Scotts Castle Holiday.
The owner although not readily available, kept in touch either by phone, text or the housekeeper to ensure our stay was good. Which it was.
